2 Changes for Accredited Providers in 2011!

The Commission on Accreditation has approved several changes to program requirements that have been incorporated into the new manual. Two new changes include:
1) Removal of the graduate degree requirement for the Designated Nurse Planner in an Accredited Provider Unit.
2) Removal of the target audience representative from the required members of a planning committee.
Changes may be implemented as of January 1, 2011 but will not be required until at least 12 months after publication of the new Accreditation Manual.

Taking a Leadership Role as Health Care Goes Green!

Over the course of her career Barbara Sattler, DrPH, RN, FAAN, increasingly came to see that the places where people work and live affect their health. She is currently an Associate Professor in the School of Nursing and Director of The Environmental Health Education Center at the University of Maryland. The multi-disciplinary center focuses on community-based strategies to address environmental health issues. It is training nurses in issues such as Brownfields and Superfund sites, drinking water, lead and indoor air quality. The Center developed EnviRN, dedicated to providing nurses with accurate, timely and credible scientific information on environmental health. It has been described as a "virtual nursing village" where nurses can share strategies, tools, resources, and ideas in order to promote environmental health in their workplaces, homes, schools, and communities. Dr. Sattler has authored a report for the international harmonization process sponsored by the World Health Organization and the International Labor Organization on the communication of hazards associated with chemical exposure. Peripheral IV Certification!

This workshop has been designed to help RN's gain didactic and "hands-on" experience with the theory and skills needed to insert a peripheral IV. Information on legal aspects, malpractice insurance, and proper documentation will be included. Supplies will be provided for practicing the insertion of peripheral IV catheters using anatomical models and a computer simulation device - in full compliance with OSHA standards. The program will incorporate the Infusion Nurses Society (INS) 2006 Standards of Practice. Individual competency validation will be provided by the instructor at the end of the program. Do You Need Mandatory Continuing Education for Re-Licensure?

Yes...30 hours worth! The Pennsylvania State Board is implementing this process in a cyclical manner (see table below). You do not need to submit CE certificates with your renewal form but must keep the documents for 5 years for auditory purposes. If you do not complete the 30 hours your license will be renewed but you will incur fines. You then have 6 months to complete the CE or be subject to disciplinary action from the Board.

Medical- Surgical Review is part 1 of 4 courses that comprise Villanova CE's RN Refresher Program. It is open to all RN's and may be helpful if you are planning to sit for med/surg certification test. This course runs Tuesday evenings for 8 weeks. Villanova CE faculty as well as local area experts will be teaching theses sessions!
The other 3 courses include: Geriatric Physical Assessment, Basic Pharmacology Review and Skills Update and Review. These courses are designed for the returning to practice nurse but are open to any nurse looking to refresh skills and enhance knowledge!!!

This conference offered in collaboration with the Professional Nurse Educators Group (PNEG), has served as a prominent vehicle for educators from all over the United States to strengthen their roles through learning, sharing and networking with professional colleagues. Those involved with education in schools of nursing, continuing education, staff development, and entrepreneurs will find this meeting advantageous. Goals for the 2010 conference are to:
• Discuss critical issues and concerns facing professional nursing education and development
• Develop practical strategies for effectively managing the challenges encountered in the work environment
• Explore how those in education and practice can successfully sustain competent learners and practitioners
• Network with colleagues in academic, staff development and continuing education roles
